Both the Green Party of Canada together with Conservative Party of Canada come in the midst of trying to find brand brand new leaders. Former Green Party frontrunner Elizabeth May stepped down in November 2019, and previous Conservative frontrunner Andrew Scheer resigned on December 12 2019, but continues to lead the party until a fresh replacement is available.
The Charlatan sat down with Annamie Paul for a virtual discussion on some of the key issues facing Canadians across the country with the Green Party leadership debate set for the fall.
The trail to leadership
In 2000, Paul founded the Canadian Center for Political Leadership (CCPL) and handled the company until 2005. The CCPL is designed to offer training that is political racial minorities and native individuals. She said she had been influenced to receive the institute because she knows there are lots of challenges people in marginalized teams face in Canadian politics.
One issue which has plagued the Green Party may be the not enough variety amongst its users.
“The Green Party may be the minimum different of all of the major parties, ” Paul stated. “i must say i do think that most of the users observe that and would like to make a big change. ”
Based on a research carried out because of the Institute on analysis and Public Policy on Canadian political party variety, the Green Party of Canada had been 2nd to final in variety amongst members for the 2015 and 2019 federal elections—Bloc Quebecois rated final both in elections.

“i could deal with low representation as a result of my lived experience and because we have always been a female of colour, but also because We have the expert experience to change institutions that battle with this particular issue, ” Paul stated.
While Paul explained that folks of color should have to bear n’t the matter of underrepresentation alone, they do play integral roles in reshaping the narrative.
“I don’t fundamentally believe that it’s the obligation of these of us whom find ourselves in marginalized communities or communities who will be discriminated against to educate, ” she stated. “It’s perhaps not our responsibility, however it’s inside our interest. ”
“I’ve attempted to shine the maximum amount of light she said as I can from my very humble platforms on Indigenous peoples and the issues of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
The federal Keystone XL and Coastal GasLink pipeline task which cuts through Wet’suwet’en land happens to be the foundation of major stress between native individuals and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government—an issue on Paul’s brain.
“The Liberal federal government promised self-determination and just what native peoples got in exchange had been pipelines they don’t want on the unceded regions, ” Paul said.
“I realize that these specific things cost money, however you can’t build a honourable culture for a continued legacy of colonialism and anti-Indigenous discrimination, ” she stated.
Annamie stated she intends to follow the un Declaration in the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and abolish the Indian Act. The Canadian federal government in 2016 adopted UNDRIP, but, UNDRIP won’t have recognition in Canadian legislation. North West Territories and British Columbia would be the only two governments to place it into law at a level that is provincial.
